Pandemic Proportions: COVID-19 and the Small Family Farm

Farmer Troy checking his seedlings!

Everyone is effected by the Pandemic in one way or another. Of course we stay home to protect ourselves and others. We wear masks at the grocery store when we are forced to go out on a supply run. But all in all, how does it make a difference in the life of an every day farmer? TREMENDOUSLY! Truthfully, while I was aware that society as a whole interlocks – that services and functions are all interrelated – I had never considered how something of this nature would impact our lives and farm. We are very fortunate to live in a small town, a very close knit community. Our home and farm are outside of town so we are not directly impacted by the day to day city operations – or so we thought. We as farmers are just entering our primary growing seasons. We planted expecting to participate in the two local weekly farmer’s markets, as well as sell to area restaurants. But, no markets. No gathering of 10 or more people so markets are temporarily shut down. No restaurants. Local restaurants are either closed completely or having reduced business in the take-out only services because people are staying home for self-isolation. I provide flowers for the lobby and breakfast area at a local hotel. The Hotel has no guests so they don’t need flowers or the expense of purchasing flowers when they have no paying customers themselves. Meanwhile, back at the farm – we planted in anticipation of sales in these areas. Plants don’t understand Pandemics. They grow, flower and produce. Period. Whether you need what they produce or not. As I said, we live in a very close community and the local support for area farmers – my family in particular – could not be more tremendous. As usual, I post on social media when I have produce available. The response and support have been overwhelming. Because of fears of contamination – I offer drive-thru pick-up from my home two days a week. People place orders by text, call or Facebook message. I pack their produce accordingly. On pick-up days – they simply drive-thru my circular driveway, I meet them with a bag of vegetables, pass it through the window, accept payment and they ride off into the sunset – never having to leave their vehicle. Is it a different way to do business – yes. Is it harder? No, just different. It may be a little inconvenient for my customers, but they are real troopers. Thus far, we have been able to sell everything we have grown. As weather warms and plants mature, quantities are increasing and we hope customers will continue to support our harvests. We have heard reports of larger growers having to plow under acres of crops because of a lack in work force to pick, process and deliver. This breaks my heart – not only for the farmers having to sacrifice all their hard work and income – but also the many families missing out on the food supply. We are all trying to find our way during these difficult times. Remember – everyone is dealing with their own burden. Try to help your neighbor and support local small businesses, especially your local farmer. You’ll be glad you did.

Thank you,

Carol and Family
