Asparagus?

Asparagus was one of those vegetables I always viewed with the “YUCK” attitude when I was a child along with broccoli, cabbage, squash, collards, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. As I have matured, I’ve learned to appreciate the taste of those vegetables. Now, I love asparagus! Roasted, grilled, steamed or boiled – I love it! When growing asparagus, it requires a little more effort to establish and should be planted in a location you don’t want to plant in the future because it makes and needs a permanent bed. After some research, I’ve determined that it grows best in beds in furrows – with root systems parallel to the furrow – and about 6”-8” deep. Root systems like to be kept moist so drip lines are the recommended method of watering along with some form of mulch – bark, leaves or straw – to maintain moisture in your soil. When it goes to seed, it makes beautiful plumes of green you can use with your flower arrangements. Asparagus is a perennial vegetable that can produce delicious spears for up to 20 years with proper care. Although it takes a little patience to establish, asparagus is well worth the wait and is a fantastic addition to any home garden. An asparagus crown is the root system of an asparagus plant that has taken 1–2 years to grow. Crowns are dormant when sold and are planted directly into the soil, where they quickly establish and begin producing spears much sooner than starting from seeds. With crowns, you can begin harvesting light crops in the second year, while seeds may take 3–4 years to reach harvest maturity. By using crowns, you can enjoy a thriving asparagus bed in less time, making them a great choice for gardeners looking for both convenience and productivity.

Here we grow again!
