I really enjoy the holidays – most years. I will state that the past couple of years have not been atypical in any shape or form. Between the arrival of COVID-19 and the effect on our country, erratic weather trends and storms of amazing proportions, plus everyday life – 2020 and 2021 were so different from the norm. I generally keep something growing year-round – in raised or container beds, if nothing else. Despite the difficulties, I maintained a few things over the holidays. My collards, broccoli, kale, celery, carrots, beets and a few die-hard lettuce plants have survived to provide us with a few fresh gatherings for meals. Of course, I am having garden withdrawal. I have read too many seed catalogs and garden supply flyers. So little is required this time of year – and those things that are required have to be waited out for appropriate weather conditions to complete. But yesterday……..yesterday was sunny and sixty degrees…… and I have garden fever!!!!

I ventured out to pick kale for a local restaurant and it was a beautiful afternoon. I picked, pulled weeds, trimmed stems and just puttered in general around my raised beds. I started digging out seed trays and seeding soil, cleaned around container beds and started prepping for seeding. I called my husband and asked him to stop and pick up supplies at various locations. He, of course, was a good sport. He got home and said, “Oh, you’re planting.” “Yep, time to get seeds started…” I don’t think he was particularly thrilled, but he is a good sport. I filled seed trays and set up seeding areas. I am ready to seed. I can’t wait to get home this afternoon and finish seeding my trays. In our zone, we usually try to have seedlings ready for transplanting the end of February. We usually direct seed at that time, as well. Woo hoo! It’s garden time! Here we grow again!
