It’s been a long month or two with no lettuce. I didn’t realize how much I love having lettuce at my finger tips until I didn’t have any. Strange weather patterns – just another weird thing about the year 2020 – resulted in the early bolting of my summer lettuce crop. The excess rain from hurricanes caused powdery mildew, root rot, and delayed germination. Yes, I cheated and purchased seedlings to replace some of my earlier plantings that failed. Then, I over planted seeds to try to make up for the earlier failures. What does that mean? It means that very shortly I will have lettuce, kale, bok choy and Chinese cabbage coming out of my ears! I started with the weekly pickings and have now bumped up to twice a week. Which will soon advance to every other day. But, I am so glad I can have my salads again!
Georgia has such a diverse climate, you never know what tomorrow's weather will be! I have lots of fall crops in the ground: broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, scarlet curly kale, white and red Russian kale, regular curly kale, red sails, scarlet romaine, little gem, buttercrunch, and salanova lettuce, Malabar and space spinach, Chinese cabbage, bok choi and Rosie Asian greens, rainbow chard, butternut, acorn and spaghetti squash and celery. Still picking bell, baby bell, banana, cayenne and jalapeno peppers, eggplant, okra and a late planting of yellow squash! So nice to work out in the garden on a cool afternoon! Just might have a salad tonight! Here we grow again…..
